Snacks are evil

Here's the deal. I like fruits. I like vegetables. My everyday meals are generally quite healthy.

But I also love my unhealthy stuff. Baked yummies. Chocolately goodness. Cheese. Cream.

I have always believed in moderation, which is one reason why I do not believe in dieting. Because I think restricting myself will only mean that I will crave the restricted foods even more.

So, I have always allowed myself little snacks as treats even during those rare phases when I am supposed to cutting out the not-so-good-for-me stuff.

But, the problem is, these supposedly little snacks become my downfall. A spoonful of peanut butter doesnt end with just one spoonful of peanut butter. Before I know it, half the jar is gone. In one go.

Or, if I decide to have a slice of cheese to nibble on, soon, there is no more cheese in the fridge.

Or, yesterday. I figured, nuts are healthy and good for me, so I will just have a small handful of peanuts. Five handfuls later, I figured, well, it wouldnt do any harm if they were coated in a little chocolate and then a layer of sugar, right? I mean, its only a tiny amount of chocolate and sugar that can coat a peanut, right? So, yes, peanut m&ms suddenly became the ideal snack for the moment.

Or, the time when I really really needed something chocolatey. And made myself some hot chocolate with a few squares of dark chocolate... and then thought of sweetening it up with some spoonfuls of Nutella. And once the Nutella was added, why not just go with the cream on top too?

Yes, I know. I just don't realise that I have passed the line until the line is way out of sight.

And so... my thinking right now is, remove all unhealthy potential snacks from the house. Just stick to the fruits and I will be good, right?

As I write this, I see my husband walk in with a pavlova. Hmmm ... removing unhealthy potential snacks alone isnt going to help, is it? I need a different strategy.

And please don't suggest will power. I am allergic to that.

Ain't that the truth...if it's in the house...well, you know what happens. Luckily no one else lives here but me....but that doesn't always stop me! Good luck.

Oh, I can relate too, Kamana! Eating is hard sometimes, isn't it? Funny how something so basic, so simple, so primal is so hard... mostly because we make it so oftentimes, I think. All things in moderation... I feel that way too. We eat pretty healthy here. But my husband has a super-sweet tooth, and loves sweets. So I bake... ;o) But I'm trying to get this to be a less-sugar household this year. Luck to us both! Happy Weekend ((HUGS))

I'm right there with you. I love the healthy things, always have them in the house, but I also love the junk, like cupcakes.. and oh yes, peanut butter... (did you see the cake in a cup on a post a few days back?)....YUM. Anyway... I struggle with the same issues. When you find what works, let us know! I'm not great with will power.

If you mix fruit in with all of that it is healthy, surely...?
I've tried sweetening dark chocolate cakes with grated beetroot for my sugar addict son - and he struggled to eat it because it was 'too sweet'...I have also seen icecream recipes with peas and beetroot lately - and it doesn't have to be cream when there is frozen yoghurt around. That is my cunning plan this year...

The only thing the odious Dr Phil ever said that I agreed with was "if it's not there, you can't be tempted by it." I think it's great you are ridding the house of junk. As for pavolva - well, that's simply irresistable.

Something I sometimes do is eat a tiny bit of cake or chocolate at the kitchen sink, then quickly place the rest of the portion under the tap! Or throw it into the rubbish. I am not so desperate as to get food out of the rubbish.

I have a cabinet in my classroom, for my binders of units, ideas, etc...and snacks. Expresso-dark chocolate covered nuts, dark chocolate covered granola bars, chocolate bars, peanut brittle. Do you see a pattern? We are too much alike, haha! Hmmm, why cant I lose that depressing eight pounds?

That fruit looks so good. I always struggle with that same issue. I guess everything in moderation!!
