I was on the interview panel for recruiting new teachers to a school recently. There were several candidates, and each one was memorable for one reason or the other ... but usually, not for the right reasons! Let me share with you here some of the responses to our questions that remained with me after the actual interview.
Q: What makes a good teacher?
A: A good teacher can make anything.
~
Q: Why did you become a teacher?
A: I never wanted to become a teacher. I have always thought it was a very boring line of work. But I applied for the teacher training course because my brother forced me.
~
Q: What is the best thing about being a teacher?
A: The holidays!
~
Q: What do you consider to be your biggest achievement in your previous school?
A: I don't think I achieved very much. Actually I didn't get along with them and so I thought I will try my luck here.
~
Q: You are currently working as a school principal. Why are you applying for the post of a teacher?
A: Being a principal is very hard work. Right now in my life, I want to slow things down and enjoy my life. So, I think teaching is easy and would be better for me. I can relax and it will give me more free time. As a principal, I have to be on task all day long. There are no free periods. As a teacher, I will have many free periods.
~
Q: How much time can you devote to the school?
A: Oh I am very free. I can spend a lot of time, even the whole day at the school. My husband and I are having some marriage problems and I don't want to really go home at all. So, you can expect me to be at the school 24/7. Actually I wanted to ask... does the school provide any housing facilities?
With responses like this, is it any wonder that we are holding another round of interviews soon? And I am keeping my fingers crossed that this time, there will be some applicants who have some solid responses and crucially... an actual interest in teaching.
Two years later, it’s here!

Working with young children on a daily basis, I could not conceive being in this line of work if it was not for the love of the children.
They are our future and they teach us so much.
I hope you will find the perfect fit for your school. :-)
Well at least they were honest with their responses and you found out how they were BEFORE they were hired....
You have got to be joking!!
Mind you, I'm sure the first one, answering what makes a good teacher, was attempting a clever kind of wordplay ... ?
Either I keep the boys at home and do home schooling or take them abroad and send them to a good international school. Seriously this is freaking madness!!!
That's terrible! Hope the next round is better.
Unbelievable! I agree..at least they were honest prior to getting the position!
Unreal! Hope the next round is better!
I hope you were able to keep your jaw of the floor! I can't believe any of these people would actually expect to be hired.
That is really horrifying! What has happened to a passion for working with children.
I gather you're still hiring? :-)
those are some seriously scary answers, but at least they were honest. :-)
