Thoughts on being held captive

For me, birds are a symbol of freedom.
I don't like to see them caged
or kept in captivity like this one here.
I love watching birds fly,
the graceful movement of their wings,
the way they balance themselves and glide through the air.
Seeing them tied down, unable to fly,
makes my heart break a little.
The same goes for other pets kept in homes
in ways that constrict their ability to move about freely.
Like rabbits in tiny hutches.
Or fish in a glass bowl where they can do little else except go round and round and round again.
I've seen iguanas trapped in waterless fish tanks
with food poured down a chute for it to consume;
hamsters and mice
~mice? why have them as pets, anyway?~
in cages as big as only a shoe box;
a colleague keeps snakes in a glass box.
~shudder: remind me never to go to his house, ever~
Maybe I don't understand it
because I am not a very animal person.
I am fascinated by all weird and wonderful creatures,
but would prefer to admire them from afar
rather than have one constantly around me.
But don't all creatures deserve to have the freedom they are born with?
Don't they deserve to be happy?

this reminds me of a quote that says: God loved birds so He created trees ... man loved birds so he built cages ...

That's why I love birding. I feed them --and help them through bad winters and times when they count on our help. But--they still have the freedom to come and go as they choose!!!!
Hugs,
Betsy

Oh yea Kamana I do agree with you. Every soul needs to be free and able to fly off when one wishes too.

I do love my pets, 3 of the most awesome dogs around. As for them being able to go free, it wouldn't work here for many reasons. But mainly, they wouldn't be able to find their own food and they would be trapped and taken to an animal shelter. Which is what happens to all those other pets you named. We had hamsters and fish before. It was fun watching the fish swim around and the hamsters running around on the wheel. But if they were free in the wild, they would have been some predator's dinner :oP

This reminds me of the photos I took at a local zoo.

Your thoughts are true and I enjoy how you've expressed them. Cages are not good...for anything.

I agree....especially with the animals of the wild..it's no place for them to be caged-up.
Dogs and cats, now that's another story...to me they are not "caged" if they primarily stay inside and are allowed outside at times. My daughter has a high fenced back yard where she lets her cats (abandoned & rescued) out while she is out there with them. They enjoy it and know when its time to go back in! They are happy!
But birds, snakes, lizards...etc.....nope let them be free......

we have a maine coon cat. he is very very big and looks like a little lion walking about our house. i often look at him and wonder what he would be like in the wild.

having also been raised in africa, i understand your appreciation of the wild and creatures who are free to roam in that space.

thought provoking questions kamana...

I have no problem with domesticated animals like dogs and cats, which are bred to be domestic and wouldn't know how to survive in the wild. Birds, fish, snakes and other wild creatures captured and caged are a whole 'nother story. Small fish are probably OK in a large enough tank, but how could the average home ever have a large enough cage for a bird?

I love animals and wish I could have a dog. It is nice to visit my son and his wife-to-be because there I have two granddogs who act like I am the best. They even share my bed when I visit overnight! Unconditional love is what they give which is so nice. I don't think they mind being kept....but, then, I think that is different from keeping ocelots or wild creatures.

I agree and love birds too. I think cats are the answer as they choose to come and go as they please! Mostly at the moment they choose to stay curled up in front of the fire!
