The four o'clock flower.
It blooms everyday at four o'clock.
Comes in a variety of colours
- deep pink, white, yellow being the most common -
and can have a mix of different colours on the same flower, sometimes.
Incredibly easy to grow;
probably the first flowering plants that I grew as a child.
I remember we grew a lot of these then
but they were almost always the pink variety.
I remember too how I would wait and watch them unfold,
checking the time to see if it really happened at four o'clock on the dot
or if the flowers had their watches set to different time zone.
When I learned about pollination in school,
I remember coming back home
and trying to cross fertilise the pink and yellow varieties,
- in the hope that the resulting flowers would display a mix of pink and yellow -
then waiting for the seeds to mature.
Even today,
whenever I see these plants,
I always look for the dried black seed left behind when the flower dies.

Nature is full of miracles that never cease to amaze me!
The things I learn in blogland just amaze me. Thanks for sharing this with me.
Beaautiful, similar to morning glories I guess. Take care.
wow...what a smart flower !
although 4 o'clock is about the time I need an afternoon nap :)
also...how long did your posting photos issues last with blogger ?
That is such a lovely flower...and I'm not one for yellow flowers, but this one is so sweet. Mother Nature and all her wonders never fails to amaze! I like flowers that open during different times of the day--like moonflowers, that open late. Magical... Happy Day, Kamana ((HUGS))
my grandmother grew these - I loved sitting on the front porch and looking at them
isn't nature amazing??
How cool! I'm not familiar with these - will have to check them out further!
So lovely! I just discovered your blog, and I'm really enjoying it.
I've never heard of them either....thanks! I will look into them more too (don't suppose they'd grown in my cold corner of the world though!)
How can this be?! Amazing. It made me think of morning glory too-but they are not precise!
It is so pretty - what a glorious colour.
internal clocks have always fascinated me. i have one. i do not wear a watch. my mom has one too. i look for these clocks in nature.
It's how you described them..that inspired me
...my mother grew red 4 o'clock flowers and I do remember they grew very abundantly...but I can't remember if they blossomed exactly at 4...that was a long time ago!...thanks for the reminder...
they are really quite a cool flower!
