Willpower ... or lack thereof

[The pomegranate - symbol of temptation in some cultures]

I can very much relate to Mae West's quote:
"I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it."
Why is it that I always give in?
If I set myself a boundary,
all I can think about is reasons justifying the need to cross that same boundary.
If I get myself started on a diet,
for example,
all I can think about is eating.
And the minute I do cross the boundary,
~ the minute I wolf down a whole packet of cookies ~
I realise the futility of my actions.
Giving into temptation is never was I expect it to be.
It is just so unsatisfying.
A complete anticlimax.
And the guilt is so overpowering.

Mahatma Gandhi is believed to have said that:
"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."
I wish I had that kind of strength.
Do you?

What is the one thing that you can never resist?

I am terrible for saying I will do something and then not keeping to it. I usually last about three weeks then completely go against everything I vowed. THe one thing I managed to do, finally, after years of trying and failing, was to stop smoking. I have stopped for just over two years now and I am pretty certain I will never go back as it is so much harder to stop each time. My thing to resist now is laziness-always using the car and never walking anywhere. Good luck with your goals!

Hi there you, what a wondeful picture (oh and forgot to tell you that your new header is gorgeous too). Yep I know where you're from...I've got it with black liqourice ... tons I eat of that. And the best ones we have only in Holland. So come over and try some then you have something else to add to your list ;-)

Nice photo you got here. I've always been imagining how this fruit looks like.

I agree with most people here, chocolate is hard to resist. :)

A sure fire way of my gaining weight is to tell myself I'm dieting. Then I'm automatically thinking about food. I don't think stretching the boundaries is a bad thing. I think it means you are creative, and don't like to be boxed in.

some think that the pomegranate was actually the fruit used by Eve to tempt Adam (not the apple). some say the tomato. all i know is that it is very lush and tempting.

Potatoes-potatoes-potatoes!!...any way...boiled-mashed-roasted-sliced and fried(home-fries).Followed closely by eggs! Any way...hard boiled...fried... poached ...omelettes...frittatas!
I have never been a big fan of sweets but I am partial to any kind of warm fruit pie and ice cream!
As far as pomegranates go,they usually show up here in the autumn and have been known to be given as Halloween treats, instead of candy! I love them and do swallow the seeds, many people are against this but trying to spit them out seems to take away from the enjoyment!

Love the new header!

Ice cream! Oh, I do know what you mean! I remember reading somewhere in Buddhist Studies, oh I wish I had the quotation, something to the effect of: being fully alive (that's so not it) simply by eating when we're hungry, sleeping when we're tired. So simple! (until a bout of emotional unrest or an "existential crisis" comes along, bringing with it that thought pattern -so familiar we barely notice it- that is, we realize (after the box of cookies of course) quite unsatisfying...

on another note, next time I indulge in the "pomegranate," I'm gonna slow down and savor, cause there's nothing wrong with indulging, when it's done right.

What a thought-provoking post- Thank you!
(I also love the new header.)
